Before this year, Tesla had never shown any interest in wireless charging, but now it has confirmed it will launch a wireless induction electric vehicle home charger, and its chief designer believes that wireless charging will be expensive to install.
▲Tesla chief designer Franz von Holzhausen confirmed that Tesla is researching wireless charging technology
In a video regarding the Cybertruck, Tesla chief designer Franz von Holzhausen confirmed that the company is working on the technology: “We are working on inductive charging technology. By then, you don’t even need to plug in anything. You just drive the car to the garage. Just put it on the mat and start charging.”
Franz von Holzhausen even believes that wireless charging is expensive: “Personally, I’m not excited regarding this product, mainly because I think it will be quite expensive. For a home wireless charging station, in addition to being installed on the wall, In addition to the actual charger needing to be connected to the electrical panel, an induction pad also needs to be installed, and the induction pad usually needs to be embedded in the concrete. In addition to the installation at home, the induction receiver also needs to be installed in the car, which also adds cost and weight to this. It’s not cheap to do, and consumers are doing all this just so they don’t have to spend three seconds plugging it in.”
