Three people were arrested on Monday as part of the investigation into the terrorist attack which claimed the lives of two Swedish football fans on October 16. This information was reported by VRT News and confirmed by the federal prosecutor’s office. The three people were placed under arrest by the investigating judge.
“As part of the federal prosecutor’s office’s case on the terrorist attack on October 16 in Brussels, during which two Swedish football fans were murdered, five searches took place on Monday morning,” said the spokesperson for the prosecutor’s office, Eric Van Duyse. “Three searches took place in Ninove, one in Saint-Josse-ten-Noode and one in Ixelles.
“Three people were deprived of their liberty for questioning,” continued the prosecutor’s spokesperson. “Two of them were charged by the investigating judge with murder in a terrorist context and participation in the activities of a terrorist group. The third was suspected of violating the legalization of weapons. All three were placed under arrest warrant.”
The federal prosecutor’s office has no comment at this time.
The attack took place on Monday October 16, shortly following 7 p.m., on Place Sainctelette, in the center of Brussels. The shooter, Abdesalem Lassoued, opened fire first on a taxi, then on the passengers of the taxi who were fleeing. The latter fled into the entrance hall of a building, but Lassoued followed them and shot them.
After the shooting, a manhunt began for the perpetrator, who claimed responsibility for the attack in a video posted on social media shortly following the incident. On Tuesday October 17, shortly following 8 a.m., the man was finally shot dead in a drinking establishment in Schaerbeek.
The investigation has already placed under arrest a man from Tervuren who, according to the federal prosecutor’s office, may be linked to the weapon used during the terrorist attack. According to his lawyer, the man denies any involvement in the attack.
