Terror warning in Austria increased to second highest level

The terror alert level in Austria has been “increased” since March 2022. Because of the recent escalation in the Middle East conflict and the terrorist attack in Brussels, the security authorities also see a “concrete threat situation and increased risk of attack” in Austria. As Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) announced on Wednesday, the terror warning will be raised to the second highest level.

The last increase took place following the terrorist attack in downtown Vienna with four deaths on November 2, 2020. Karner made the comments in a joint press conference with Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner (ÖVP), State Security Chief Omar Haijawi-Pirchner and Vienna military commander Kurt Wagner.

It was announced that in the future the police will rely even more heavily on forces from the Federal Army for their protective tasks. A presentation by Karner to the Council of Ministers stipulates that up to 190 Federal Army soldiers should be deployed for spatial and property protection measures, especially in Vienna. The additional “specially trained forces” of the Federal Army will be “used primarily to protect Jewish institutions.” Diplomatic missions have already been protected by soldiers.
