The young age of the terrorist suspects and St. Pölten: These are two aspects that stand out after the arrests in connection with the possibly planned Islamist attack on the Vienna Rainbow Parade. The two boys who are now in custody are only 14 and 17 years old. The younger one is registered in Vienna, the older one in St. Pölten.

It’s not unusual for teenagers to become extremists these days, says Peter R. Neumann of London’s King’s College. During the heyday of IS, the typical profile of an Islamist was: “Male, between 18 and 25 years old.” Now, ten years later, the “demographic range” is different.
