Cohabitation between cyclists and motorists is sometimes difficult. Casey Van Puyenbroeck, a 19-year-old young woman from Ternat in Flemish Brabant, had the bitter experience of this this weekend.
While she was in the passenger seat of the vehicle driven by her 21-year-old boyfriend and her little sister (4 years old) and her little brother (2 years old) were in the back, a man dressed in cyclist and wearing a helmet threw himself at them armed with a knife. The young woman filmed the panic scene from inside the vehicle: “Do you think he can pierce the windows with his knife?”, we hear in the video.
Casey Van Puyenbroeck, who posted the images on the internet, then returned to this nightmare moment for the Newspaper : “On a small road, my boyfriend had to reverse to let a car coming in the other direction pass,” she relates. Before the cyclist abandoned his bike to head towards the vehicle… “Suddenly, he pulled out a knife in front of us. The man walked towards the two cars and started shouting incomprehensible things while waving his knife.”
Fortunately, despite the threat posed by the cyclist, the young couple managed to remain calm: “I told my friend to close the doors and windows. As the man circled the car, my friend was able to turn around and calmly drive away.”
The man went to the police
Although the couple was able to handle the situation relatively calmly, the two young children who accompanied them were panicked: “My sister was screaming in fear,” continues Casey. “We continued on our way and the whole way she kept looking out the window, constantly asking if the man was going to come back to hurt us.”
After returning home, Casey Van Puyenbroeck called the police directly and filed a complaint on Sunday morning with the supporting images. “My sister is really traumatized. I myself slept very badly,” explains the young woman.
On Sunday followingnoon, the Hal-Vilvoorde public prosecutor’s office finally confirmed that the cycle tourist who committed the attack had gone to the police station on his own. He is a 74-year-old man from Opwijk. He should be heard soon by the Dilbeek police.
