London: US teenager Coco Gauff suffered an unexpected setback at the Wimbledon tennis Grand Slam. US’s Amanda Anisimova defeated Coco in the women’s singles third round. Score: 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-1. Both have grown up playing together at the junior level.
France’s Harmony Tan will face Anisimova in the pre-quarters. Tan began by upsetting former world number one Serena Williams in the first round. Czech Republic’s Maria Bouskova reached Grand Slam quarterfinals for the first time in her career. Maria defeated France’s Caroline Garcia in the pre-quarters. Score: 7-5, 6-2.
World number two Tunisia’s Ounce Jabour will take on Belgium’s Elisa Mertenso Maria. Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova also returned from defeat. Paola Badosa of Spain blocked Kvitova’s pre-quarter entry. Score: 7-5, 7-6 (4). Romania’s Simona Halep will face Spain’s Badosa.
Halup is the remaining women’s champion at Wimbledon. Former French Open winner Barbora Kryjikova lost to unseeded Australian Ajla Tolajanovic. Kryjikova won the first set 6-2 and lost the second and third sets 6-4, 6-3.
World No. 1 and top seed Iga Zwiatek of Poland, who was hoping for the title, was knocked out in the third round. 32-year-old seeded French player Alice Cornet upset Iga in straight sets. Score: 6-4, 6-2. Iga lost following 37 consecutive matches.
Australia’s Nick Kyrgios has reached the pre-quarters in men’s singles. Kyrgios defeated fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsis of Greece in the best match of the tournament. Kyrgios won in four sets. The fight between stars who have great enmity with each other was exciting at the end. Kyrgios entertained the crowd by arguing with the referee, serving under the arm and scoring incredible points. Score: 6-7 (2/7), 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (9/7).
In the first set, both players fought without giving up their serve and it went to a tiebreaker. Breakpoints created by nick were saved by tsytsipass. The Greek won the set in the tiebreaker. A similar battle was seen in the second set as well. Both the players were not ready to give up. As luck turned to Kyrgios, the set went with him. Nic broke serve at the beginning of the third set and advanced the set. Tsitsipas held on, saving service break points early in the third set. The fourth set also ended in a tie breaker. Nick sealed the match with a beautiful shot in a hard-fought tiebreaker. For the first time since 2016, Nick has advanced to the Wimbledon fourth round. Tsitsipas served 21 aces while Nick served 14. Former World No. 1 Rafael Nadal of Spain has reached the fourth round. Italy’s 27th seed Lorenzo Sonego was not even a challenge for Nadal.
Nadal, the champion of the 2008 and 2010 seasons, won in straight sets of 6-1, 6-2, 6-4. Nadal faced a service break for the first time in the eighth game of the third set. Nadal’s complete dominance was seen in the first two sets. Nadal easily won the first set 6-1. Then Nadal won the second set 6-2 and made the match just one set away.
Nadal saw a service break early in the third set. When the rain arrived, the match was stopped briefly to close the center court roof, much to Nadal’s dismay.
Sonego came back following the break and took the break. Nadal took the break right next to him and secured the pre-quarters by winning the set 6-4. The win gave Nadal a boost as he aims for a calendar slam by winning the Australian Open and French Open titles this season. Nadal’s opponent in the fourth round is the Dutch player Van da Sandeschelp. Sandeshelp defeated France’s veteran player Richard Gasquet.
