From October 13 to 15, in Copenhagen, the 2023 edition of the FNCS Global Championshiop took place. It is the equivalent of a world cup for the Fortnite battle royale, organized following qualification in numerous online tournaments. Unfortunately, one duo didn’t even have time to jump off the bus.

Fortnite: from attempted relaunch to global phenomenon

In just a few years, Fortnite has transformed into a social phenomenon. First thought of as a sort of tower defense by Epic Games, Fortnite failed to appeal to the public. This is when the development team decides to offer a battle royale mode that things got carried away. Easy to learn, full of subtlety and requiring near-perfect execution to win, the title is quickly played by millions of players.

From college classes to steaming, to content creators on YouTube, Fortnite is found everywhere, played by all generations, and generates a lot of money. Because if the game is free, it includes optional purchases allowing you to personalize your avatar and accessories. Step by step, Epic Games has made additions transforming the game into a real social network, a sort of metaverse before time where we meet our friends, we chat, and we play. To do this, partnerships are multiplying, the end of seasons become events not to be missed, the menu changes from one day to the next, the servers are cut, concerts are organized.

More recently, and following several tests in the form of temporary events, a mode without construction appeared and met with great success. At the same time, we find around Fortnite a competitive scene, where players are ready to fight alone or with others. The purpose is precisely le FNCS Global Championship, which recently took place in Denmark, in Copenhagen. The cash prize of one million dollars was won by the duo Cooper & Mero, the first French, PodaSai & Snayzy leaving with 18,000 dollars and 27th place.

He crosses the Atlantic, is disqualified, and has to turn around immediately

In this ranking manque cependant Logan “Bucke” Eschenburg, who had made the trip to join Okis’s side. Bucke came all the way from Detroit, but was not allowed to participate. He has even got escorted back and put on a plane to go home. A renowned professional player, he was almost instantly disqualified by the organizationwho invoked Article 8 of the regulation, which refers to conduct.

He initially joked on X (Twitter) that he had been disqualified because he looked too “fast” during training, but the tone quickly changed. For some observers, the disqualification would be due to the use of NVIDIA Digital Vibrance, which makes colors more vivid. For others, it would have smoked and drank where the competition took place, or allegedly had an altercation with an Epic Games employee. The truth is more to be found in alcohol consumption, as Clix, Bucke’s friend and streamer, indicated. Still, Bucke himself clarified things while admitting to having made a mistakeactually justifying the sanction received:

I’m already a pretty shitty person, you don’t need to make up lies regarding things I’ve done to make me look even worse. I screwed up, I understand, but stop lying regarding stuff, it’s just weird. No one feels shittier than me for letting my teammate down.

Epic Games has not commented on the situation, and Okis finished in 73rd and last place in the rankings, the latter having had to engage alone. He still leaves with $4,000 as a consolation prize. In any event, three hours following learning he was disqualified, Bucke was on the plane back to the United States.
