Terrebonne City’s Single-Use Item Ban: Success Stories and Challenges for Restaurants

10 months following the city of Terrebonne banned single-use items, 90% of restaurants with dining rooms have complied with the regulations.

Some large fast food chains are still struggling to do the same.

However, the Subway restaurant at Galeries Terrebonne recently became the banner’s first Canadian establishment to serve reusable tableware.

“People’s acceptance is going really well and we are proud to participate in this great initiative,” explains the Subway supervisor at Galeries Terrebonne, Joëlle Laliberté-Fillion.

“We hope that there are others who will board,” she adds.

The management of Galeries Terrebonne is delighted that all businesses comply with the regulations.

“It’s certain that when they are big banners, it’s a little more difficult for them to comply. It takes more approval and everything in terms of tableware and logos, but they succeeded,” explains the general director of Galeries Terrebonne, Magali Arbor Roy.

The latter affirms that this new way of doing things already has a slight impact on the budgets of merchants.

“In the long term, we will see savings. It was more the initial expenses to buy the dishes and everything, but if we compare with what they threw away, on the scale it will be a good saving,” maintains Ms. Arbor Roy.
