Power Outage Nightmare: One Family’s Fight For Survival After Storm Éowyn
A week after Storm Éowyn wreaked havoc across Ireland, thousands remain stranded in darkness with no clear end in sight. While ESB Networks in the Republic of Ireland reports progress in restoring power to 76,000 homes, farms, and businesses that have been left without electricity, Northern Ireland faces a longer road to recovery. Northern Ireland Electricity (NIE) Networks has deployed over 1,550 staff and contractors, working tirelessly to bring power back online, but some regions might not see the lights flicker back on until Saturday evening.
For Emma Garrett from Mallusk, County Antrim, the lack of electricity has turned into a harrowing nightmare.
“It’s been miserable,” she describes, highlighting the misery she and her family have endured. “A nightmare.”
ms. Garrett’s father-in-law, 79-year-old Wilfred Garrett, lives with her and her mother-in-law next door. He suffers from heart failure and diabetes, relying heavily on electricity to monitor his blood sugar levels and manage his condition.According to Ms. Garrett, Wilfred was recently given “a diagnosis of a matter of months to live” by doctors over the Christmas period.
“With type 1 diabetes, circulation is badly affected, so staying warm is really important,” explains Ms. Garrett, who also serves as chief executive of a social enterprise.
Adding to the stress, she revealed that Wilfred relies on his electricity supply to alert him of any sudden changes in his blood sugar levels.Without it, his health is at risk.
Expressing her frustration, Ms. Garrett states that NIE Networks “don’t seem to have prioritised” her father-in-law’s situation and criticizes thier lack of support. They delivered a generator, but it was clearly inadequate for his needs, only powering a TV and a few lights, leaving his heating system out of reach.
Forced to find alternative accommodation, Ms. Garrett had to spend hundreds of pounds on hotel rooms for herself, her two sons (aged 11 and 14), and her parents-in-law. Her husband stayed behind to keep the property secure, enduring the cold and darkness.
“We do have a stove which was able to heat one room, but we’ve no warm water, no means to cook food and it’s dark, so it’s been pretty miserable,” she recalls.
The financial burden of the outage has been immense, with Ms. Garrett estimating she has spent more than €1,500 (€1,800) on hotel stays, food waste, and daily food purchases.
Despite her own circumstances, Ms. Garrett expresses deep concern for struggling families forced to rely on food banks. She worries about those “living day to day” and how they are coping amidst the ongoing power outage crisis.
Demanding better support from NIE Networks, ms. Garrett advocates for the company to provide accommodation for vulnerable individuals and low-income households severely impacted by the power outage.
“They definitely should be prioritising people who are vulnerable, and perhaps people who are reliant on food banks, or people like my father-in-law, who are medically unwell,” she urges. “They should be providing accommodation for them at this stage when they …”

Northern Ireland Power restored Steadily Despite Storm Éowyn’s Impact
Northern Ireland continues to recover from the powerful impacts of Storm Éowyn, with power restoration efforts underway by NIE Networks. Despite significant progress, thousands remain without electricity.
NIE Networks issued a statement on its website, emphasizing its tireless efforts to restore power across Northern Ireland. ”We continue to work tirelessly to restore power to all those still affected across Northern Ireland,” the statement read.”we have over 1550 staff and contractors escalated, additional support from other countries and further support on the way.”
while repairs are ongoing, the company acknowledged that some residents may experience further interruptions. “Over the coming days there may be occasions when householders experience interruption to their electricity supply as we undertake permanent repairs and work to restore all those impacted,” the statement continued.
What will be the focus of NIE Networks’ examination after the repairs are completed from Storm Éowyn?
Storm Éowyn Aftermath: An Interview with NIE Networks
Storm Éowyn caused widespread disruption across Northern Ireland, leaving thousands without power. We spoke with Alan Campbell, Head of Communications at NIE Networks, to get an update on the ongoing restoration efforts.
How severe was the damage caused by Storm Éowyn to the NIE Networks infrastructure?
“the storm brought exceptionally strong winds and heavy rain, which resulted in significant damage to our electricity network,” explained Alan. “Numerous trees fell onto power lines, causing outages across Northern Ireland. We faced challenges in accessing some areas due to fallen debris and flooding, making the repair process more complex.”
Can you provide an update on the progress of power restoration?
“Our teams have been working tirelessly around the clock as the storm hit. We’ve made considerable progress restoring power to those affected. As of today, we’ve managed to reconnect a large number of customers. However, nearly 76,000 customers are still without power,” said Alan.
What steps are being taken to ensure the remaining customers are reconnected as quickly as possible?
“We recognize the inconvenience this situation is causing,” said Alan. “We’ve mobilized over 1550 staff and contractors., and we’re receiving additional support from other electricity companies in the UK. We’re prioritizing repairs in locations that affect the largest number of people and will continue to work through the night and weekends until everyone is back online.”
Are there any specific areas that are taking longer to restore power?
“yes, some rural communities, notably those with extensive damage to network infrastructure, will take longer to restore,” acknowledged alan. “We are working closely with local community organizations to provide updates and support during this time.”
What advice would you give to customers who are still without power?
“Above all, please prioritize your safety. Avoid downed power lines and report any hazards to NIE Networks immediately,” urged Alan. “Check our website and social media channels for the latest updates on restoration efforts in your area. We are committed to getting everyone’s power back on as quickly and safely as possible.”
What are the next steps for NIE Networks after the repairs are completed?
“We will be carrying out a thorough assessment of the damage caused by Storm Éowyn,” said Alan.”This will help us to identify areas where we can strengthen our infrastructure and make our network more resilient to future storms. We are committed to learning from this experience and doing everything we can to prevent similar disruptions in the future.
