He became known as Vitus in the film of the same name. He turned his back on acting and remained loyal to music.

It was a whirlwind start: Teo Gheorghiu conquered Swiss cinema screens in his role as Vitus in 2006. The then 14-year-old impressed not only because of his piano playing, but also because of his acting.

Music was and remained my first great love.

The film with Bruno Ganz opened two career doors for him. He decided on music.

From child prodigy to world-class pianist

17 years later, Teo Gheorghiu is an internationally successful pianist, artistic director of the Freiburg Concert Society and lecturer at the Freiburg University of Music. When asked why he never acted in another film, he replied: “Before Vitus, I had been playing the piano for seven years. Music was and remained my first great love. Nevertheless, the two months on the film set were a great experience for me.”

He completed most of his musical training in London and Philadelphia. The now 31-year-old feels so comfortable in London that he said in an interview in 2015 that he no longer wanted to return to Switzerland. Love changed his mind: he now lives in Freiburg with his partner Melanie and his three-year-old daughter Gioia.

Romanian roots as inspiration

Gheorgiu was born and raised in Switzerland. However, the Swiss-Canadian also has roots in Romania. After his father’s death in 2018, he pursued these roots. Gheorghiu rides his bike from Rüti ZH, where he grew up, to his father’s grave in Romania. The trip itself and the Romanian culture would later serve as inspiration for his album “Roots”, which will be released in 2022.

Anyone who would like to experience the piano virtuoso live can do so very soon: On October 14th, Teo Gheorghiu will play his latest solo program in the Aula Magna at the University of Freiburg.
