Tents for asylum seekers continue to cause disputes

The tents for asylum seekers continue to raise waves in the federal states. For example, the SPÖ Burgenland shot at Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP), who was “idly watching” despite the dramatic refugee situation. However, the minister was undeterred and considers tents in other federal states to be likely in addition to those in Upper Austria and Carinthia. The situation is “dynamic, and in some places dramatic”.

The tents will be set up on Interior Ministry properties, for example at state police headquarters, to prevent asylum seekers from staying in front of schools, for example, Karner explained yesterday following a working meeting with Greece’s Migration Minister Notis Mitarakis at the Interior Ministry in Vienna.

Those with little chance of asylum, such as people from India, Morocco and Tunisia, would be accommodated there. It might be “good” that there will also be tents in other federal states, said Karner when asked regarding the plan for Tyrol and Vorarlberg.

Refugee coordinator for the care of refugees

The head of the federal welfare agency and refugee coordinator of the federal government, Andreas Achrainer, speaks regarding the current situation regarding accommodation and basic services for refugees.

Yesterday evening in the ZIB2, refugee coordinator Andreas Achrainer once more appealed to the federal states to provide permanent quarters in the state basic supply, “then no tents would be necessary”. The federal government had pointed out the problem for months, but the federal states had not followed suit. The BBU and the Minister of the Interior speak weekly with the federal states so that they can fulfill their tasks – he hopes for consensus and positive signals are already being heard.
