Tensions, Protests, and Politics: The Conviction of Ousmane Sonko and its Aftermath in Senegal

The speaker’s voice, reading the message in Wolof, echoed through the loudspeakers of the great mosque of Touba, with one goal: to ease the tensions that are shaking the city.

“Serigne Mountakha said that everyone who is in the city must go home out of respect for the guide. He gave a directive to all followers who love Serigne Touba, anyone protesting here in Touba must go home out of respect for Serigne Touba. »

It is important to note that the demonstrators left a destructive footprint in their wake, targeting vehicles, ransacking two gas stations, attacking the residence of Aly Ngouille Ndiaye, Minister of Agriculture, and issuing threats once morest members of the government.

These demonstrations follow the conviction of Ousmane Sonko, leader of the Pastef party, to two years in prison for “youth corruption”. This verdict, coming following accusations of rape by Adji Sarr, might deprive Sonko of his candidacy for the presidential elections scheduled for 2024 in Senegal. Sonko’s supporters accuse President Macky Sall of using justice as a tool to remove their candidate from the electoral race by imposing a sentence of ineligibility on him.

It should be remembered that ineligibility designates the legal incapacity of a person to stand for election. This conviction might therefore mean the end of Sonko’s political career, if he were declared ineligible.
