Tension between Iran and Israel in the UN Security Council

Iran’s UN ambassador Amir Saied Iravani defended the country’s rocket attack on Israel saying it was necessary to restore balance and deter. It was also emphasized that any aggression by Israel would have consequences.

The Israeli ambassador, for his part, called for crippling sanctions against Iran and at the same time warned Iran of an upcoming counterattack.

– The consequences for Iran after their attack will be far greater than they could ever imagine, said Danny Danon, who is Israel’s UN envoy, in Wednesday’s meeting.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres had a few minutes earlier told the Security Council that time was running out.

– It is high time to stop this terrible spiral of escalation after escalation that is sending the people of the Middle East off the cliff, the Secretary-General told the Security Council.

The 15 members gathered in an emergency meeting in the wake of Israel’s assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, Iran’s rocket attacks on Israel and the ongoing Israeli ground invasion of Lebanon.

Guterres condemns Iran’s rocket attacks on Israel and calls for an end to the “eye for an eye” attacks.
