Tens of thousands of delegates and demonstrators in Chicago for the Democratic National Convention

Minnesota Governor Walz, who Kamala Harris recently named her running mate in the fall, visited the breakfast for the delegation of the neighboring state of Wisconsin and promised hard work and little leisure until the November election.

– We can sleep when we are dead, Walz said, while Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer visited the delegation from Florida.

– We are on the verge of electing an administration that will take us the next step forward, she promised.

Democrats in Florida have begun to believe that Florida could once again become a swing state after Harris took over from President Joe Biden as the party’s presidential candidate and sparked new excitement in the party.

– Joe Biden made a selfless and heroic decision, and it will be wonderful to celebrate him tonight. And then we’ll turn around and look to the future, said the Democratic Congress representative Kathy Castor from Florida.

In place in Chicago

Thousands of delegates from all 50 states, as well as the capital Washington DC and US territories in the Caribbean and the Pacific, were in Chicago on Monday morning before the opening of the Democratic National Convention in the evening.

There were also thousands of demonstrators who are planning protests outside the national assembly in support of Gaza, but also demonstrations for abortion, about climate change and against racism.

One of the participants in the Gaza march, Taylor Cook, has come from Atlanta to urge all delegates to demand an end to arms sales to Israel.

– We tell Kamala that she is instrumental in this. People think it’s just Joe Biden, but she’s the vice president. So we say, you have to stop if you want our votes, Cook said before setting off for a mile-long march ahead of Joe Biden’s inaugural address.

One of the few points of tension during the four days of the national convention is how Harris uses her words to convince the young people to vote for her rather than let Donald Trump, who is even more pro-Israel than Biden and Harris, win the election.

Speech after speech

According to tradition, Harris first speaks on the last day of the national meeting, Thursday.

The national meeting opens with a keynote speech by President Biden on Monday. Later in the week, former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton will also speak, as well as vice-presidential candidate Walz.

Several congressmen and governors, as well as the leader of the major UAW auto union, Shawn Fain, are also on the podium.

On Wednesday, Kamala Harris will be elected symbolically. Because of uncertainty about the deadline to get on the ballot in Ohio, she has already been elected in a virtual election, but in keeping with tradition, it will be repeated with all the cheering and balloons and flag-waving that goes with it.
