In Serbia there have once more been mass protests once morest the government. In Belgrade alone, tens of thousands of people took to the streets on Saturday evening, it was the seventh such demonstration in the capital since the beginning of May. There were also protests once morest the government in other cities.

Above all, the demonstrators accuse the government of President Aleksandar Vučić of using the media under their control to promote a culture of violence. Over the past few weeks, protests once morest government policy as a whole have developed from this core concern. For years, critics have accused Vučić of increasingly using autocratic means to cement his power.

The protests were triggered by a wave of violence: in early May, a 13-year-old student shot dead eight children and a security guard in a Belgrade school with his father’s gun. Less than 48 hours later, a 21-year-old killed eight people in another gun attack in several villages near Belgrade.

Among other things, the demonstrators are demanding that television stations that distribute violent content be revoked their broadcasting licenses. They are also demanding a ban on pro-government newspapers, which they say are fueling popular tensions, and the resignation of the interior minister and intelligence chief.
