Tennis star Sania Mirza retires; Demotion with defeat


New Delhi: Indian tennis legend Sania Mirza retires. Sania ended her international career with a loss at the Duty Free Championship in Dubai.

Sania, who played with American player Madison Keys, lost in the first round and was eliminated. It was defeated by the Russian alliance. After an hour-long fight, Sania’s alliance lost with the score of 4-6, 0-6.

The player, who had announced his retirement earlier, ended his career at the age of 36, having won six Grand Slam titles. Sania has won three women’s doubles Grand Slams with Swiss legend Martina Hinches.

India’s Mahesh Bhupathi was with Sania in three mixed doubles titles. Both of them won the Australian Open in 2009 and the French Open in 2012.
