GREEK tennis player Stefanos Tsitsipas says the Olympics have a special meaning for him because of his Greek roots and makes him hopeful of realizing his dream of winning a medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Greece, the birthplace of the Olympics, has won three Olympic tennis medals, all of which came in 1896 at the first modern Games held in Athens.
“Greece and the Olympics definitely go together like bread and butter. It’s something that has been a dream of mine since I started playing tennis,” Tsitsipas was quoted as saying by Channel News Asia, (18/7).
“Since the first time I held a tennis racket, I’ve always wanted to be an athlete who can participate in something like that. And of course, aiming for a medal is something amazing.”
“So my dream keeps growing, it keeps existing, and my path to get there is slowly building. For me, the best redemption would be to come out of the Olympics with a medal,” he added.
The Olympic tennis tournament will take place from July 27-August 4 at Roland Garros, which also hosts the French Open.

Tsitsipas has enjoyed success on the clay courts of Roland Garros in the past, reaching the French Open final in 2021 and reaching the quarter-finals of the Grand Slam in the last two editions.
“Having a good preparation before the competition starts in August is something I’m really looking forward to,” said Tsitsipas.
“I had great success there a few years ago in the same stadium when I played in the Roland Garros final.”

“So going back there with that confidence and that in my mind allows me to fight and work towards the same end goal that I did a few years ago.”
Tsitsipas will compete in singles at the Olympics as well as men’s doubles with his brother, Petros.
