Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk defeated the eighth ranked player in the world, Maria Sakkari, and advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2024 Olympics. Another Ukrainian tennis player, Elina Svitolina, lost to her opponent in the round of 16.

“Ukraine’s first racket made her debut at the 2024 Olympic Games: at the start of the competition, she beat New Zealander Lula San, and in the second round she defeated Frenchwoman Clara Burel. Kostiuk’s next opponent was the eighth ranked player in the world, Maria Sakkari, who lost only four games in two opening matches. Tennis players have already met three times: only one meeting ended with the victory of the Ukrainian woman.”
The match between Kostiuk and Sakkari lasted 2:49 hours, during which time Kostiuk scored 31 winners. The Ukrainian had an advantage over Sakkari in the number of unforced errors (47:55). In general, the game ended with a score of 1:2 in favor of the Ukrainian.
Meanwhile, tennis player Elina Svitolina suffered defeat at the stage of the 1/8 finals, losing to the Czech Barbora Krejcikova. The Ukrainian stopped one step away from the third consecutive quarter-final at the level of the Olympics.
