Tennis player Djokovic named ‘insect’

Serbian scientists announced the discovery of a new type of insect, and decided to name it Novak Djokovic in honor of the tennis champion, because of the small animal’s enjoyment of speed and endurance.

The bug Duvalius Djokovic was found inside a cave located in a mountain in western Serbia, explained to AFP, Nikola Vezovic, one of the members of the team that made the discovery.

The professor at the Faculty of Biological Sciences in Belgrade said that the discovered organism is a small, completely blind insect that lacks the substance that gives the skin its color, while it has long legs and very long antennae.

The researchers decided to give the insect the name of the Serbian champion, who won 21 titles in the major tennis tournaments, because of the characteristics of speed, steadfastness, strength and flexibility that are characterized by it.

The insect, Vezovic said, is an underground predator while Novak is a tennis court predator.

This is not the first time that Novak Djokovic has been an inspiration to scientists.

Last year, a freshwater snail discovered in Montenegro was named Travuniana Djokovic.
