Tennis player and Wimbledon winner Markéta Vondroušová (24) is getting a divorce. At the same time, it has not even been two years since she and her husband Štěpán Šimek (26) said yes at the altar. According to the newspaper Blesk, the couple have already agreed on everything.
“It just didn’t work out for us. Now we are formally resolving the divorce, but we have agreed on everything,” said the tennis player in an interview for the Blesk newspaper. Šimek proposed to Vondroušová three years ago. On July 15, 2022, they solemnly said yes at the picturesque Chateau Mcely.
Markéta and Štěpán have known each other since childhood. The former tennis player bagged the Wimbledon winner at the age of fifteen. He studied, she played tennis and together they supported each other. Unfortunately, this harmony faded over time and the couple split up. “He moved out of the shared apartment. Even with a cat. Now we are all single and have no one,” she said.
In 2023, Vondroušová became the third tennis player to win the Czech Athlete of the Year poll and also dominated the national tennis poll The golden canary. The 2024 season didn’t go well for her from the start. She later shone at the North American BNP Paribas Open when she opened the tournament with a crushing win over Pera. However, she subsequently withdrew from the tournament due to personal reasons, which she later specified as the death of her grandfather. She is currently number one in tennis, which belongs to the seventh place in the world rankings.
