Jil Teichmann was able to observe, Wednesday in Melbourne, all the way that remained to be covered to become one day one of the best players in the world. Called to challenge one of the most established girls on the circuit, Victoria Azarenka in this case, the Bienne native of Barcelona never had a voice in the matter and was eliminated in the 2nd round of the Australian Open, beaten dryly 6-1 6-2 in 1h12 within the Kia Arena.

Azarenka, too strong

Everything went wrong from the start for “Jily”, in great delicacy with her ball throw – there was a little wind but for the two actresses – and more generally with her service (5 doubles, 21% of points won with his second ball). Broken from the start, the 24-year-old Swiss had three opportunities to come back to the next game. But apart from the second – an ill-fitting forehand return – she mightn’t harbor too many regrets.

Frustrated to the point of crying out in despair before losing the first set, Teichmann – 27 unforced errors – was never able to match the consistency of Victoria Azarenka. Double winner of the Australian Open (2012 and 2013) and ex-World No. 1 today 25th in the WTA – the 32-year-old Belarusian is also an incredible raiser. She proved it to break in the third game of the second set and then showed great solidity.

Still 144th in the world three years ago, Jil Teichmann is now ranked 34th. Capable of the most beautiful flashes outside the Grand Slams – titles in Prague and Palermo in 2019, epic until the final in Cincinnati last year -, she has more difficulty in major tournaments. Before the Australian Open, the Bienne had only managed to qualify twice for a second round in nine attempts. It was at the US Open (2018 and 2021).
