The Eastern Michigan University women’s tennis team faced a tough challenge against the University of Cincinnati on January 25th. Despite showing notable doubles play and securing the doubles point for the third consecutive match, the Eagles ultimately fell short, losing 4-1.

Head coach Ryan Kucera praised his team’s early performance, stating, “Our doubles play was excellent. We came out firing and really played with the right tactics and the right mentality.”

The doubles point came down to the wire, but Eastern Michigan proved victorious. Lara Diaz Zayas and Reggie Mendez secured a decisive 6-2 win at No.3, while the No. 1 pair of Sabina Brichackova and Prerna Vichare clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 victory.

However, Cincinnati dominated singles play, sweeping through four matches to secure the win. Despite valiant efforts from Eagles players like Daniella Shved, iva Daneva, Brichackova, and Hazmukova, the Bearcats proved too strong.

Coach Kucera, while disappointed with the outcome, remained focused on the bigger picture. “it’s a long match, though, and we need to learn to keep our discipline and composure up the entire time,” he emphasized. Sakurako Watanabe secured the final point for the Bearcats with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Iva Daneva at number five singles. while the match concluded as a Cincinnati victory, Eastern Michigan refused to back down, pushing several points to their limits.

Prerna Vichare and Sabina Brichackova, Eastern Michigan’s formidable doubles duo, continue to make important strides. They boast an impressive 3-0 record for the season, accumulating a combined 36 victories during their time representing EMU. Their strong performance positions them near the program’s top 20 doubles win list. They are just four and five wins away from tying for the 19th spot currently held by Miriam Westerink and Avi Gogvadze.
