On March 21, Gabriel Niedermayr cleared the double at the ÖTV youth indoor championships U14 in Leibnitz. Now the local young talent has transported the strong form to the international level. The 14-year-old reached the final of a Tennis Europe tournament for the first time last week at the Vilar International in Aizkraukle. At the Category 3 U14 carpet event in the Baltic States, he only just missed out on the premiere title: the Upper Austrian ultimately had to admit defeat to the top seeded Estonian Ken Ink 2:6, 6:2, 4:6.
Until then, Niedermayr had walked through the tournament grid with impressive ease and only eleven game losses in four games, a total of only six game losses in the first three rounds. After beating Estonian qualifier Kristo Vellerand 6-1, 6-0, he also defeated third-seeded Lithuanian Ugnius Remeikis 6-2, 6-1 and British wildcard Samuel Fussell 6-1, 6-1. And he defeated the sixth-ranked Finn Alex Tuomolin 6: 3, 6: 2, before only the final showdown did not have the desired outcome. In the doubles competition, Niedermayr and the Finn Aatu Niemelä were eliminated in the quarter-finals after a match success.
Timothy Bezar, meanwhile, also did well, who used his main competition wildcard to three victories at the Emilio Sánchez Academy Youth Cup U16 in El Prat de Llobregat and only lost out in the semifinals against the Spanish local hero Roberto Perez Socas with 2:6, 2:6 pulled. In the doubles competition of the Category 2 clay court event, on the other hand, the first round was the end of the line. For the girls, Lana Srejic lost in the third and final individual qualifying round.
