French n°1 Ugo Humbert started the grass season perfectly by winning his first round in ‘s-Hertogenbosch against the Australian Kubler.

Roland-Garros has barely closed its doors when the grass season begins! Many players have already chosen to play on the green surface, three weeks before the start of Wimbledon, and this is particularly the case of the French n°1, Ugo Humbert. The soon-to-be 25-year-old Messin, 36th player in the world, has won many more matches on clay this year than in previous years (eleven in 2023, all tournament categories combined, three in 2022), which allowed him to move up the rankings, and he hopes to continue his momentum on the grass tour, where he won the biggest tournament of his career, in Halle in 2021. Ugo Humbert is playing this week in the ‘s-Hertogenbosch tournament and he passed the first round by beating Jason Kubler 6-4, 6-2 in 1h22. Faced with the 97th-ranked Australian, who had just lost in the quarter-finals of the Surbiton Challenger against Andy Murray, the Frenchman served 11 aces and never lost his serve.

Four other French in the running

The French n°1 broke at 2-2 in the first set on his first chance, then got a set point at 5-3, before finally concluding at 5-4 on his third set point. In the second, he broke at 1-1 and then saved the only break point Kubler had in the whole match, before breaking again at 4-2 and winning on his first match point. The grass season is off to a good start for Ugo Humbert, seeded n°7, who will face Emil Ruusuvuori in the second round (who has just eliminated him in Madrid and Rome on clay) or Brandon Nakashima (1-1 in confrontations, in qualifying). Four other French people have made the trip to the Netherlands and will start their tournament on Tuesday: Adrian Mannarino, Arthur Fils (who will face off in the first round before challenging Daniil Medvedev in the round of 16), Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard and Arthur Rinderknech. Also note this Monday the elimination of the seeded n ° 8, Maxime Cressy, against the Swiss Marc-Andrea Huesler (6-2, 7-6). This is the ninth straight elimination in the first round of a tournament for the American born in Paris, who has not won a match since February 21!
