Seeded number 1 of the ATP tournament in Halle, Daniil Medvedev qualified with difficulty for the quarter-finals thanks to a success in three sets once morest Laslo Djere.

Daniil Medvedev will not miss the quarter-finals of the ATP tournament in Halle. The Russian, seeded number 1 on the German turf, was able to get the better of Laslo Djere but had to work hard to achieve it. From the first moments of the meeting, the world number 3 took the initiative. Indeed, from the first passage in the service of his opponent, Daniil Medvedev managed to break to lead three games to nothing, not without dismissing two break points on the way. From there, the two players were not put in difficulty on their respective engagements. After missing a first set point on Laslo Djere’s serve, Daniil Medvedev needed two more chances on his own to seal the first set. Back to the wall, the Serb might not remain without reacting and he started the second set with a bang. On his first opportunity to serve his opponent, the 65th player in the world took the lead on the scoreboard, leading three games to nothing. Nevertheless, Daniil Medvedev upped the ante and, winning three consecutive shutouts, erased his backlog in an expeditious manner.

Medvedev bounced back following a missed tiebreak

From then on, the two players held their serve firmly and explained themselves in a decisive game. Winning four of the first five exchanges, the world number 3 seemed well on his way to concluding the meeting… but a huge air pocket restarted the match. Indeed, with six of the next seven points ending in his pocket, Laslo Djere reset the counters, taking Daniil Medvedev in a third set. This time, the Russian left almost nothing to chance. Taking up the basics of his start to the match, the seeded number 1 of the tournament took his opponent’s service straight away to lead three games to nothing. But, following missing three double break points, Daniil Medvedev trembled when Laslo Djere used the seventh game to erase his late service game. In the process, the Russian replied with a white break allowing him to serve to end the meeting. The first match point was good for the world number 3 (6-3, 6-7, 6-3 in 2h12′), who will find Roberto Bautista Agut for a place in the last four. The Spaniard, seeded number 8, got the better of Brandon Nakashima in two straight sets (7-5, 7-6 in 1h56 ‘).
