Tennis: ATP Finals: Medvedev keeps a cool head – Sinner shortly before reaching the semi-finals

The world number one from South Tyrol prevailed 6:4, 6:4 against the American Taylor Fritz in a high-class new edition of the US Open final and can only theoretically make it through to the semifinal round after the second smooth victory in the second group game through a complicated one Miss a three-way comparison.

“It was a very tough match, we know each other very well,” said Sinner, who was loudly celebrated by the home fans in the Inalpi Arena: “It was a very important day for me today. I’m happy to have done it .”

Sinner will face Russian Daniil Medvedev in his final group game on Thursday, who has one win under his belt. Fritz also has a win from two games – he lost the direct comparison against Sinner and won against Medvedev. On Thursday, the American will duel with the still winless Australian Alex de Minaur, who no longer has the semi-finals in his own hands.

Sinner, who is still facing a doping ban, dominated the tour for long periods this year and secured both major titles on hard courts (Melbourne and New York). On Monday he was honored by Boris Becker for his premiere as number one in the world at the end of the year. The Italian is the driving force of the season finale at the foot of the Alps – and is delivering so far.
