Tennengau Initiatives Against Violence Against Women: You Have to Keep Waking People Up

Standing Up Against Silence: A Community Fights Against Violence Against Women

The issue of violence against women isn’t just a statistic, it’s a heartbreaking reality that echoes through countless lives. In the state of Salzburg, a clear call has emerged for more active intervention. Police officers Juliane Auer and Anna Seiwald, stationed in Golling, highlight the alarming frequency of the problem: “There are more than 90 entry and approach bans in Tennengau alone,” they explain, mentioning that “Most of them are in the Hallein area, of course, but we also see cases in Golling or Abtenau.”

“It happens quite often that a neighbour calls us and says: ‘Things are so bad with my neighbors, what should I do?’ Mechanically speaking, ‘If we get a call, we have a reason to go and see if something has happened. Normally people don’t call the first time anyway but only when something happens more often,’ Auer explains. They hope for more citizens to step up and be more actively involved.

The “Coffee with Cops” campaign, staged in front of the Gollinger pharmacy on Monday, presented an opportunity for community engagement. Sitting beside their informational stand, Boots, the pharmacist, and Auer, highlighted a shared concern. Wagner is organizing her “30 Days Against Violence Against Women” campaign for the second year in a row, a testament to her dedication to raising awareness and fostering change.

“There’s just too much happening, it feels like every day you open the newspaper and something has happened again,” she says. “That’s why it’s so important to me, on the one hand, to ‘keep shaking up’ society and encouraging moral courage, and on the other hand, to convey to the women affected that they are not alone and that there are places they can turn to. This happens in a variety of ways.”

Breaking the Cycle of Silence

Tragically, violence against women can thrive in the shadows of silence. Fear, shame, and a sense of isolation often prevent victims from seeking help. The “30 Days Against Violence Against Women” campaign aims to combat this silent suffering by disseminating information, providing resources, and creating a supportive network.

The campaign fosters a sense of community solidarity by encouraging neighbors to look out for one another and speak up when witnessing suspicious activity. It underlines the importance of active bystander intervention, urging individuals to challenge harmful attitudes and behaviors.

Promoting healthy relationships and fostering respectful communication are central to the campaign’s long-term goals. Educational workshops and community events provide platforms for open dialogue, empowering individuals to recognize the signs of abusive relationships and learn strategies for prevention.

Empowering Women, Strengthening Communities

Promoting systemic changes is essential to addressing the root causes of violence against women.

The campaign advocates for increased funding for domestic violence shelters and support services, ensuring that victims have access to safe havens and comprehensive assistance.

It calls for stricter enforcement of existing laws and policies, holding perpetrators accountable for their actions and deterring future violence.

Championing gender equality and challenging harmful gender stereotypes are crucial components of the campaign’s agenda. By promoting respect for women’s rights and dismantling patriarchal norms,

we can create a society where violence against women is unacceptable.

Hope for a Safer Tomorrow

Creating a world free from violence against women requires a collective effort. Each individual has a role to play in fostering a culture of respect, accountability, and support.

By actively challenging harmful attitudes, speaking out against injustice, and supporting survivors, we can create a safer and more equitable society for all.
