Choosing and driving a motorcycle is not an easy task. They all have different characteristics (dimensions, seat height, weight…) that we must take into account when choosing it, above all, so as not to see ourselves in a hurry when circumstances require more skill. Similarly, do not think that just because you know how to ride a bike or drive a car, you are already valid to drive a motorcycle. In fact, familiarizing ourselves with our two-wheeled companion is a fundamental key to controlling it and minimizing risks. For this reason, Francis DominguezGeneral Manager of Peugeot Motocycles for Spain, shares with us a series of tips that novice users should be aware before ‘gas’:
–good equipment: “Complete motorcycle equipment is recommended to protect you from burns, bruises, etc.,” explains Domínguez.
Avoid them by equipping yourself with gloves, an approved helmet, suitable closed shoes and a jacket with reinforced shoulders and knees. “These items are a worthwhile investment for the protection they provide and their durability over time,” underlines the general manager of the French brand.
–Meet the new vehicle: Get to know the new vehicle, whether you are a regular motorcycle user or not. As the expert points out, “a progressive adaptation period to your new motorcycle or scooter is essential.” Go from less to more (first with a smooth ride), study their reactions (braking, curves, etc.). “It’s worth taking it easy at first if you want to avoid scares,” says Domínguez.
–Internships for new drivers: If it is your first motorcycle and you do not have a specific permit for motorcycles, Domínguez emphasizes the importance of taking some training classes prior to removing the vehicle from the dealer. “Get information from driving schools and hire at least one hour of practice for a first contact supervised by a professional, it is vital.” I also recommend you to access the platform ‘Vive la Moto’ of
Anesdor, where you will find content for road safety for motorists, he comments. “And whether you already have a specific motorcycle license or not, don’t rule out the idea of continuing to train. There are many courses adapted to terrain, types of driving… they are a great way to acquire good habits from the beginning, improve and perfect maneuvers with the help of specialist monitors, as well as providing greater safety. In addition, it will also allow you to know how far your vehicle goes to get the best out of it », he explains.
–Better alone, although well accompanied: “In this period of adaptation, value taking passengers,” he stresses. Learn to ride the motorcycle first, get used to it, its weight, control your balance… Adding one more element to this equation can influence a moment of emergency braking or any other unexpected maneuver.
–Progressive rolling on the road: Regarding the first steps with your new motorcycle, Domínguez points out: «it is advisable that you do not do these first kilometers in urban areas, look for a road with little traffic». In this way, you will be able to study the behavior of your new scooter or motorcycle without feeling overwhelmed by city traffic and other vehicles.
–Caution on wet asphalt: “It is not advisable to do the first kilometers on wet or damp roads,” recalls the expert. This circumstance requires additional control of the vehicle so, especially if you have just acquired it, it is convenient to spend a few kilometers to observe and familiarize yourself with the behavior of the mount on a slippery surface.
–emergency braking: Emergency braking is very common in the city, so it is essential to “be alert” to what is happening around you. Remember that in case of emergency braking on dry ground, the motorcycle must be completely vertical when acting on the two brakes with different intensity (with practice you will learn when and how to apply said intensity). If it is your first motorcycle, a model equipped with ABS or combined braking is better. In this way, you will not have to worry regarding dividing the braking between the front and rear wheels. “In this aspect, the entire Peugeot Motocycles range is equipped with one or another braking system to maximize the safety of its users”, explains Domínguez.
–Keep a safe distance from other vehicles: In most cases you will be surrounded by other vehicles, and even people, so it is essential that you observe them to anticipate their maneuvers. In urban driving, the Peugeot Motocycles expert advises respecting the safety distance and keeping the index and middle fingers of each hand resting lightly on the brakes to minimize braking time in case you have to act quickly.
–basic knowledge: Francisco Domínguez insists on something fundamental when purchasing your vehicle: «read the manual and comply with the recommendations for use of your motorcycle set by the manufacturer». Tire pressure, fluid levels… Keeping up to date with all these issues will help you prevent incidents.
–Don’t ride your motorcycle when you’re stressed: «Anxiety can alter your behavior on the road, your ability to react, just like worries, which can make you distract yourself thinking regarding other things… At the handlebar, it is essential that you are present, for your safety and that of others. the others,” he concludes.
