It depends on the company and the work to be done, but taking an average of what is paid for agricultural jobs, with a contract of 6 to 9 months, a Guatemalan can earn up to US$3 thousand per month abroad (Q23 thousand 430 ) without counting overtime.
This was reported by Corina Sáenz, president of the recently created Guild of Recruitment and Employment Agencies Abroad (GAREX) of the Guatemalan Chamber of Commerce (CCG) and representative of the firm OLA, a labor operator.
Sáenz indicated that the difference with the Labor Mobility program of the Ministry of Labor (Mintrab) specifically for the United States, compared to the agencies affiliated with GAREX, is that the former makes labor contracts only with US companies that work through a government agreement.
On the contrary, GAREX agencies seek agreements with US companies in general, thus achieving greater coverage. The interviewee stressed that both ways of looking for work abroad are within the law and security for the people interested.
Free services
The indicated gvremial was presented this Wednesday, February 21 and brings together 11 legally authorized private companies with different lines of business.
According to Sáenz, the services they offer are free, since the employer in the US is the one who pays for the recruitment; Guatemalans who apply only have to spend on the processing of their personal documents such as passport and criminal record, among others.
The American employer pays for the plane ticket, visa processing, social security and, according to the terms of each contract, housing, breakfast, lunch and dinner are provided.
“We urge people who wish to work abroad to do so legally with all their papers in order, with security of employment, salary, overtime; in addition to being clear in what state they will reside in, how long they will work and when they will return, and thus not venture into something uncertain”, .
Corina Sáenz, president of the Guild of Recruitment and Employment Agencies (GAREX)
Currently, temporary employment contracts are being processed to work in Mexico, Canada, United States and they are in negotiations with Spain.
Work visas range from 6, 9 and up to 12 months and following completing the agreed time, the workers return and must be in Guatemala for 3 months. They can then travel once more because it is a circular program and the employer rehires based on staff performance.
More than 20 thousand contracts in 2022
The president of GAREX commented that the Guild was created to unite and get new employers and projects in the US, with the help of Mintrab.
A 2022, GAREX mobilized more than 20 thousand people with temporary employment contracts, with visa, insurance, housing and other benefits. Most of the job openings are in agriculture.
In the last 4 years, they have mobilized abroad to more than 58 thousand Guatemalans and began in 2010 in alliance with the International Labor Organization (ILO), establishing workers from Guatemala in Canada.
Report scams
The Mintrab has a space to warn regarding labor mobility scams, of people offering jobs abroad in exchange for money.
The complaint is confidential and they request information from the complainant and the person or company indicated.
In this space you can also report registered and authorized recruiters who charge for the process.
In addition, this Ministry, through its official social networks, constantly publishes reported pages and those of those who have verified that they are not within the law, so that Guatemalans do not fall into scams.
