Temporary Retirement for an Old School Pavilion in the Infrastructure

An old school pavilion in temporary retirement
The Pré-du-Canal college will no longer be used at the start of the August school year. On a temporary basis, until the creation of a third primary school?

Hidden in the middle of the residential towers of the Moulins district, the Pré-du-Canal college and its four obsolete classrooms are not, strictly speaking, the flagship of Yverdon’s schools. The eighty children who go there daily this year are likely to be the last to wear out their bottoms there. The City has just announced its closure at the end of the current school year for questions of “educational and organizational opportunities”.

Explanations. Four classes of four different levels are installed there: 1P-2P, 4P, 5P and 6P. “Teachers and students are a bit isolated there,” says Sarah Christe, the director of the Pestalozzi Primary School to which they are attached.

The idea is, therefore, to move them from the start of the school year in August to the Collège des Isles. “Exchanges will be favored for the former, while the latter will have better access to the various services available there: psychologists, psychomotor therapists, and speech therapists.”

In total, a hundred schoolchildren are affected by this move, since it also involves the transfer of a 3P class from the Isles site (the only one of this level at this location), to the college Pestalozzi.

This decommissioning does not mark the end of the Moulins aedicule. “We will see what temporary use we can find for this building”, underlines the municipal Jean-Claude Ruchet. Temporary because the Yverdon school microcosm is changing.

“While some are talking regarding a transformation into a neighborhood house, the municipal authorities do not rule out that schools will need it once more for the start of the 2024-2025 school year. We will probably see more clearly this fall,” continues the socialist.

The building might also enter into an equation with several unknowns: the creation of a third Yverdon primary school. “On this file, I hope to have some answers early next year,” he continues. Initially envisaged for 2027, its realization remains linked to the realization of various neighborhood plans – in particular Gare-Lac – which are slow to see the light of day.

In conclusion, the closure of the Pré-du-Canal college marks a significant change for the Yverdon school microcosm. While the hundred schoolchildren affected by the move will benefit from better access to services, the fate of the building remains uncertain. Municipal authorities do not rule out the possibility of re-purposing it as a neighborhood house or even towards the creation of a third Yverdon primary school. This change underscores the importance of adaptability and the need to constantly reassess the educational landscape. Only time will tell what the future holds for this old school pavilion in temporary retirement.
