Over the first six months of the year, the number of temporary workers fell sharply compared to the same period last year. A direct consequence of the labor shortage.
Companies are struggling to recruit and are looking all over the place for labour, including temporary ones. However, this is becoming increasingly rare, putting the providers of these services under pressure.
The temporary employment market found itself in deficit at the end of June, following a record year 2022, according to data from the Swiss Staffing Index, the industry barometer. This is a first for three years.
The scenario is radically different for permanent employment, where job placement is on the rise. The turnover of the sector increased by almost 8%.
Signs of full employment
We can detect typical signs of full employment, with temporary posts falling, temporary workers being taken on more quickly by companies on a permanent basis and recruitment of new temporary workers drying up.
However, this trend might change. If the economic climate remains positive and full employment is maintained, workers’ need for flexibility and change will increase in the medium term, which should benefit temporary work as much as permanent work.
