Tellechea: More than 20 companies are seeking licenses to work in Venezuela

The president of Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA) and Minister of Oil, Pedro Rafael Tellechea, said that “there are more than 20 companies” requesting licenses to work in Venezuela, although he did not reveal the names or nationality of the applicants.

Asked at a press conference regarding the applicant companies, the minister said it was “unethical” to mention names.

In mid-April, the United States announced its decision to partially reverse the sanctions relief it had granted in October, due to – the US government claimed – the failure of the administration of Nicolás Maduro to meet its electoral commitments, in view of the presidential elections on July 28.

The U.S. Treasury Department, which has blamed Nicolás Maduro for the withdrawal of the relief, has set a May 31 deadline for foreign companies to halt all oil and gas production and export operations they have had over the past six months.

From now on, companies wishing to do business with state-owned PDVSA will have to request individual authorizations from the U.S. Treasury, which will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

“We are not going to stop because some company needs permission from the United States to come and work with Venezuela. Venezuela does not need anyone’s license to be self-employed and to be able to work,” said Tellechea.
