Pawel Durow, the head of messaging app Telegram, was arrested in France and remains in custody. AFP learned on Monday from investigators that pretrial detention had been extended until Wednesday. Dureau was arrested at Le Bourget Airport near Paris on Saturday night. Authorities accused him of not taking enough steps to prevent Telegram from being used for criminal purposes. Pretrial detention interrogation can be extended up to 96 hours.
The examining magistrate must then decide whether to release Duro or launch an investigation. Since its founding in 2013, Telegram has emerged as an alternative to the American platform. Generally speaking, Telegram refuses to disclose any user data to authorities, even for criminal offences.
