Communication technologies at the service of the patient
Teledermatology is the use of new communication technologies in the service of dermatology. Recently, several projects have been set up and have made it possible to develop different teledermatology systems.
At the University Hospital of Liège, it is an innovative and unique project in Belgium which connects the patient, the attending physician and the dermatologist. The goal you project TeleSPOT is to provide remote diagnostic assistance by dermatologists in order to sort suspicious skin lesions and speed up treatment.
Doctor Thomas Damsin, deputy clinical director of the dermatological department of the CHU of Liège, explains this approach to us in concrete terms: “We participate with first-line medical centers in the Walloon region. These centers are equipped with a somewhat special device called a dermatoscope. It’s kind of like a dermatologist’s stethoscope.” explains the doctor.
In practice, when you consult your doctor to have a mole checked, or when he detects a lesion which seems suspicious to him during a routine visit, teledermatology can be put in place quickly: “These doctors, who are equipped with a dermatoscope, can take a clinical picture. It’s a picture you just take with your smartphone.”, says the dermatologist.
And to add: “Then, the doctor takes a dermoscopic photo following having clipped a dermatoscope on the smartphone. These photos are sent to the CHU of Liège, and the dermatologist can remotely carry out an initial diagnosis on the basis of these images.
