Packages among the cheapest in Europe, “heavier” taxation than that which applies to the CAC 40, valuations at rock bottom on the stock market… Being a telecoms operator in 2023 is far from being a health journey, if we are to believe the latest study published this week by the French Telecoms Federation, which represents the sector. However, in this dark picture, there is good news for “telcos”: in 2022, investments in fixed networks fell (-4.4%) for the first time in ten years.
Certainly, at 10.8 billion euros, the bill remains steep. Since 2013, the year of the launch of the France Très Haut Débit plan, expenses have even more than doubled in value, as operators deployed fiber across the territory. But today, while 84% of the country is covered, Orange, SFR, Bouygues and Free finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. In rural or mountain areas, the latest sockets to be deployed will of course cost more – sometimes several thousand euros per unit. But overall, the end of the project is approaching.
