Telecommunications prices far higher than those of neighboring countries

The telecommunications prices practiced in Belgium remain well above those observed in the five neighboring countries, notes the BIPT in its international comparative study of prices for 2023. The difference is particularly glaring if the Belgian consumer opts for a mobile subscription with a quantity small or very large data.

For profiles that require mobile telephony with 1,000 minutes and a low volume of data (up to 5 GB per month), the Belgian consumer pays significantly more than its neighbors (France, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Luxembourg and Germany). For average needs between 20 and 70 GB, Belgium maintains its intermediate position and is in the cheapest half of the six countries for certain usage profiles. However, it is once once more in Belgium that consumers who want 100 GB pay the most, notes the Telecommunications Institute.

Furthermore, Belgium is “by far the most expensive country for 4P bundles (including internet, digital television, mobile telephony and landline telephony) which are very popular”.

“In a context of high inflation, operators have made one or more adaptations to their offer over the past year, both for mobile subscriptions and for fixed internet and bundled offers,” notes the BIPT.

The regulator hopes that the arrival next year of the fourth mobile operator DIGI will lead to “a renewed competitive dynamic, particularly on the fixed market”.
