Two Swiss women will play in the round of 16 of the WTA 1000 tournament in Madrid. Jil Teichmann (WTA 35) joined Belinda Bencic (WTA 13) in defeating Leylah Fernandez (WTA 20) in the 2nd round on Sunday.
The Seelandaise won 6-4 6-4 in the left-handed duel which pitted her against the 19-year-old Canadian, surprise finalist at the last US Open. She thus picks her fourth success of the season against a member of the top 30, the second in a row after that obtained in the 1st round in Madrid against Petra Kvitova (WTA 3).
Jil Teichmann suffered a small downturn in the second set, conceding her only break of the day as she led 6-4 1-0 serve to follow. But she knew how to pull herself together perfectly, seizing the opposing face-off for a third time at 4-4 before concluding with a shutout after 1h30 ‘of play.
The Seelandaise will face in the next round the Kazakh Elena Rybakina (WTA 18), an opponent she has never faced on the circuit. Belinda Bencic, who played her second round on Saturday, will find Ons Jabeur (WTA 10) in the round of 16.
