Islamabad: The Tehreek-e-Insaf Party has decided to remain in the opposition despite winning more seats in Pakistan’s general elections. Spokesperson Barrister Ali Saif said that this decision was taken on the instructions of party president Imran Khan. Party Chairman and former Prime Minister Imran Khan is currently in jail following being convicted in a corruption case.

The party had announced yesterday that it would nominate the name of Umar Ayub Khan for the post of Prime Minister and Aslam Iqbal for the post of Chief Minister of Punjab. Ali Saif announced following a discussion with Qami Wadan Party in Islamabad that the party’s decision is to be in the opposition in Punjab as well.

In the general elections held on the 8th of this month, Imran Khan’s party won 93 seats in the 265-member National Assembly. Imran Khan also had the support of independents. But it was decided to form a coalition government with Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz party which won 75 seats, Pakistan People’s Party which won 54 seats and MQM-P which won 17 seats. The support of 133 members is required to form the government.
