  • Northwestern North America has been hit by a violent winter storm in recent days.

  • Three people were killed by electric shock from a power line.

  • A teenager was able to save the baby of the murdered couple.

Majiah Washington notices sparks flying outside her Portland home as a dangerous winter storm rages outside. She opens the curtains and sees a red SUV with a power line on top. And she sees the inmates: a couple with a baby.

Majiah hears the woman yelling at her boyfriend to get the child to safety. He then grabs it and tries to move towards a driveway on the icy asphalt with his baby in his arms. He is visibly struggling and suddenly slips halfway and falls backwards. His foot touches the live wire. “A small fire, then smoke,” Majiah later recalled.

The pregnant mother also suffers electric shock

Now the mother, who is six months pregnant, is trying to get close to her baby. But she also slips and immediately suffers an electric shock. Shortly afterwards, her 15-year-old brother comes to help and is also affected.

Majiah has already called 911 and is giving information when she sees the baby. It lies on its father and moves its head. So it’s alive. Even though Majiah has just witnessed three people being electrocuted, she decides to save the child.

The dead are the teenagers’ neighbors

She went outside, approached the baby in a crouched position and avoided the power line, Majiah told press representatives on Thursday. Finally she gets hold of the little one and touches the father’s corpse. But Majiah doesn’t get an electric shock. Outside, the 18-year-old also recognizes the baby’s dead mother. It’s her neighbor.

Ice causes trees and power lines to collapse

Rick Graves, spokesman for the Portland Fire Department, praised the teenager for her heroic act. He says he can’t explain why she and the baby weren’t electrocuted. According to authorities, the little boy was examined at a hospital and is doing well.

In recent days, northwestern North America has been hit by a violent winter storm. Snow masses, freezing rain, icy conditions and freezing temperatures have been blamed for at least ten deaths in the US state of Oregon.

Freezing rain has proven to be particularly treacherous. The ice weighs on trees and power lines, which can then collapse, especially in strong winds.

Man loses two children in one day

Majiah’s neighbor Ronald Briggs confirmed to the AP that two of the dead were his 21-year-old daughter and his 15-year-old son.

Briggs watched as the couple slipped and were electrocuted. He then shouted to his 15-year-old son not to go there and to stay away. But the boy didn’t listen. “He slipped and hit the water and he died too,” Briggs said. «I have six children. I lost two of them in one day.”
