The young man from Antioquia has lived since he was four years old in Nashville, Tennessee, in the United States, where he began to feel ill after a family outing. After being taken to a hospital, his health condition worsened to the point that they had to resuscitate him and then he entered a state in which he was only alive thanks to the artificial devices to which he was connected.

After regaining consciousness, he had circulation problems. After several complications, his limbs had to be amputated.

According to his parents, especially his mother, the most difficult thing for them was explaining the entire situation to their son. “How do you tell your 14-year-old son that he will lose all his limbs?” Matías’ mother asked in statements to the media.

Although the young paisa was surprised to learn of his situation, he later began to make plans, even with the limitations arising from his new reality.

What was the bacteria?

Catalina Gutiérrez, Matías’ mother, stated in statements to the media that after they returned from the walk, the young man suffered redness all over his body, as if it were a rash or sunstroke, along with a very high fever.

After noticing the deterioration in health and being transferred from the hospital twice, the young man was diagnosed with toxic shock syndrome, which was caused by the group A streptococcus bacteria.

This bacteria entered your bloodstream and caused you to have even the slightest circulation in your blood. The diagnosis, according to her mother, was given to her on June 30 and the doctors explained to her that it is a very strange case.

How did the bacteria get into the body?

According to the mother’s story, the doctors were not able to give her an exact answer as to how Matías could have contracted or been infected with the bacteria, since the only thing the doctor said was that it is something that, although it is very rare to happen, can happen to him. To anybody.

“I wish I could have the answer to this so I could prevent something like this from happening to another dad. I wouldn’t want to see anyone in this situation, but I don’t have it,” the woman said.

In accordance with the United States Center for Disease Control and Preventionthis rare bacteria is associated with strep throat infections, which are infections of both the throat and tonsils caused by bacteria called group A Streptococcus (group A streptococcus).
