the teenager Suleman Dawoodwho died in the Titan submersible along with four other people last week, had taken her Rubik’s cube with her because she wanted to break a world record, her mother, Christine Dawood, told the BBC.
For this, the 19-year-old young man applied for the Guinness Book of Records and his father, Shahzada, who also lost his life on the Titan, had brought a camera to capture the moment.
The mother claimed that her son loved the Rubik’s cube so much that he carried it with him everywhere, dazzling people with his ability to solve the complex puzzle in 12 seconds.
“He said, ‘I’m going to solve the Rubik’s cube 12,000 feet under the sea on the Titanic'”he added.
Christine Dawood and her 17-year-old daughter Alina were aboard the Polar Prince, the submersible’s support vessel, when news broke that communications with the Titan had been lost.
“I didn’t understand what it meant at the time, but then everything got worse,” said the mother, in her first interview following the tragedy.
Christine Dawood added that the original plan was that she would go with her husband in the submersible, but “Then I stepped back and left the space to prepare (Suleman), because he really wanted to go.”said.
“I was very happy for them because they really wanted” see the wreckage of the Titanic, he added.
In addition to Suleman and his father Shahzada Dawood, three other people died on board: Stockton Rush, the CEO of the OceanGate company (which owns the submersible); British businessman Hamish Harding, and Paul-Henry Nargeolet, a prominent French explorer.
