A teenager lost his life in an accident in a burning car on Sunday night on Vienna’s northern edge of the S2 expressway. The 17-year-old is said to have been traveling with friends at a significantly increased speed a few meters before the tangent driveway when the 18-year-old driver lost control of the high-horsepower car and skidded. Within a very short time, the vehicle was on fire, emergency services reported.

The accident occurred on the expressway in Vienna-Donaustadt in the area of Hermann-Gebauer-Straße at around 2:30 a.m. The vehicle initially left the road, overturned, then crashed into a concrete barrier and caught fire. The following car drivers tried to help the three young occupants of the accident car. The 18-year-old driver and a 16-year-old passenger were rescued from the burning car with burns by other road users. But for the 17-year-old boy, any help came too late. He was trapped and might not be rescued in time. The driver was still in acute danger of his life on Sunday morning.

The fire brigade was on site for over two hours with a large contingent of five vehicles and 24 emergency services. The rescue service provided the accident victims with emergency medical care and then took them to hospital.

The S2 in the direction of Gänserndorf between Rautenweg and Hermann-Gebauer-Straße was closed during the clean-up work. The investigation was carried out by the Vienna Traffic Accident Squad.
