Baku: India’s teenage wonder R. Pragnananda in the final. The 18-year-old Pragnananda reached the final by defeating American world number three player Fabiano Caruano. Pragnanda’s opponent in the final is Norway’s legendary Magnus Carlsen. Pragnananda has previously defeated world champion Magnus Carlsen.

Four Indian players have reached the quarter finals of the Chess World Cup. Among them only Pragnananda remains in the tournament. Pragnananda also defeated the Indian player Arjun Erigaisi. After Viswanathan Anand, Pragnananda is the second Indian chess player to reach the World Cup semi-finals. Pragnananda is also the third youngest player to qualify for the Candidates Tournament.

“I didn’t expect to play once morest Magnus in this tournament at all because the only way I might play him was in the final. I didn’t expect to make it to the final. I’ll try to do well in the final.” Pragnananda said following winning the semi-final match.
The knockout format was introduced in the 2005 Chess World Cup. Pragnananda is the first Indian player to qualify for the final following this. In 2000 and 2002, India’s Viswanathan Anand won the tournament in the round-robin format.
