According to Newscientist, teenagers showed signs of accelerated brain aging during the Covid-19 pandemic, with girls affected to a greater extent than boys.

Researcher Neva Corrigan and her colleagues, from the University of Washington, USA, compared brain scans of children and adolescents, conducted before and during the pandemic, and during 2018, they collected brain scans from 109 teenagers between the ages of 9, 11, 13, 15 and 17 years old.

The researchers used this data to create a model of how the thickness of the cerebral cortex changes between 9 and 17 years of age, and in 2021 during the pandemic, they scanned the brains of a separate group of 54 teenagers, ages 12, 14 and 16.

The results revealed that lockdown measures had a disproportionately harmful impact on teenage brain development in girls, which resulted in signs of accelerated brain aging.
