Teen stabbed next to school amid viral video

A 15-year-old teenager will face justice following violently stabbing a youngster during an assault filmed next to a school in Montérégie last week.

“We intervened in a park on avenue Saint-Charles, in Vaudreuil-Dorion. On the spot, the police arrested a young man for armed assault, ”confirms Hélène St-Pierre, spokesperson for the Sûreté du Québec (SQ).

The conflict, which visibly degenerated, took place on September 12 around 1 p.m.

The 13-year-old who was stabbed in this Instagram footage was taken to hospital following the assault.

The SQ indicates that the victim is now out of danger and that an investigation is underway.

“The minor suspect was taken to a youth center awaiting his appearance,” said the Journal Mme St-Pierre.

Note that this one is only 15 years old.

Bloody pictures

At least four videos of this bloody scene were shared on social media on Tuesday. We first see a hooded teenager who rushes towards another youngster and stabs him repeatedly.

After being injured, the victim still manages to take to his heels. The suspect then puts his weapon back in his shoulder bag.

“You stabbed someone because you were insulted”, launches a young person with dismay in one of these sequences.

Subsequently, a person immobilizes the aggressor on the ground and a circle with many onlookers forms around them. We also see pants with blood stains.

A policeman from the SQ finally takes over.

“You have the right to remain silent and anything said may be held once morest you.” You have the right to have a lawyer. Did you understand ? “Explains an agent to him, handcuffing him.

The arrest and assault took place in front of the Cité-des-Jeunes high school in Vaudreuil-Dorion.

“It must stop”

“A message to parents has been sent to inform them of the situation and remind them that students who feel the need can contact the school for support,” said the Trois-Lacs School Service Center.

The video of this scene quickly went viral on the “Rap Culture Mtl” page, which has nearly 35,000 subscribers.

“Too much violence at such a young age in the greater Montreal area, it must stop,” laments the administrator of the Instagram account.

However, experts are concerned regarding the effects of such sharing (see other text).

On August 20, another knife attack in Montreal North involving at least one teenager was filmed and broadcast on social networks. The crime scene showed a stabbed 17-year-old.

Don’t share these images, experts say

To limit the consequences on mental health, two experts are asking Internet users not to share violent videos like the one that has gone viral where we see a teenager stabbing another young person in Vaudreuil-Dorion.

“Contrary to what you might think, teenagers are very critical of this kind of content on social networks and it can have a real impact on them. Afterwards, one wonders who saw fit to share such images on the internet? asks Emmanuelle Parent, co-founder of the Center for Online Emotional Intelligence.

“When there is a violent event like the one in Vaudreuil-Dorion, it is a reflex that they will have the video to capture it. It’s a way to keep proof of what happened,” also notes Ms. Parent, who recalls that 9 out of 10 teenagers in Canada have a cell phone on them.

Ban these images?

The expert adds that platforms like Instagram must take more responsibility to limit violent content published by their users.

“Social media needs to better target this violent content to remove it, for example following 24 hours. […] We know that the content removed reflects the values we have in society and those of the company. For example, when we remove the photos of women with too much skin on the canvas, it shows the past and present values of many, ”assesses Emanuelle Parent.

Strong emotions

Similar observation for Myriam Day Asselin, who is the expertise and innovation manager at Tel-jeunes.

“These images can really create strong emotions in young people, such as anger, misunderstanding, sadness and even fear. It is therefore preferable not to share them,” explains Ms. Day Asselin.

She also invites anyone who wants to discuss this subject to contact the Tel-jeunes organization.

“It’s a shame that violent content is not better removed on social networks. At the same time, we must also educate young people and discuss the impact of these images with them,” she concludes.
