- In November 2022, he pled guilty to manslaughter.
- He has now been sentenced to 80 years in prison.
A US teenager has been sentenced to 80 years in prison for killing his mother and sister. The judge in the trial, dismissing defense attorneys’ pleas for clemency, handed the youth the maximum sentence possible on charges of manslaughter in the state of West Virginia, local media reported. The boy was just 13 when he shot dead his 39-year-old mother and then 15-year-old sister in September 2020. Today he is 16.
In justifying the high sentence, Judge Jason Cuomo also said the convict had shown no clemency to his sister, who was younger than he is at the time. She would never go to college, marry or have children of her own, Cuomo told the convict. ‘You took that away from her. You didn’t give her a chance to make something of herself, but you’re asking me to do it for you.”
Teen pleads guilty
The youth pleaded guilty to manslaughter last November, declining his right to a juvenile court or jury trial. The charge carries a maximum of 40 years in prison in West Virginia. The two successively imposed sentences thus amount to 80 years. After 15 years, the then 31-year-old would have the right to apply for early release from prison for the first time. He is held in a juvenile detention center until he turns 18, following which he is placed in an adult prison.
