NAPLES.- The city of Naples in Italia is on alert after the death of another young man due to a gunshot.
Last Saturday, an 18-year-old young man lost his life after being hit by a bullet from a gun he was playing with in the streets of the Naples Historic Center.
A day later, the victim’s cousin was arrested after confessing that he accidentally fired the gun they were playing with.
This case joins other similar ones in the same Italian city in recent weeks.
There are three deaths from firearms in Naples
From last October 27 to Saturday, November 9, there were five gun attacks in which young people, some teenagers, were involved.
The cases range from accidental incidents to intentional attacks.
On October 27, a 20-year-old young man was shot in the back of the head while driving his vehicle; the victim survived.
A case that ended in tragedy occurred last November 2 in the San Sebastiano del Vesuvius neighborhood in Naples when a 17-year-old teenager murdered another, two years older than him.
The attacker was released from prison last May and shot the 19-year-old after a fight between two groups, allegedly because he dirty his shoes from an accidental stomp.
A week earlier, two teenagers, ages 14 and 17, shot and killed another 15-year-old boy in the city center.
Apology for crime comes to TikTok
These cases have raised alarms about violence in the streets, marginalization and the activity of criminal groups such as the Camorrawhich contribute to the ease with which adolescents are obtaining firearms.
Francesco Borrelli, deputy of Green-Left Alliance coalition who has been protected by escort since 2022, reported that more and more young people identify with crime, and even make altars or other tributes to criminals who have died.
The legislator recalled the case of Luigi Caiafaa 17-year-old minor from the historic center of Naples who died at the hands of the police while committing an attempted robbery in 2020.
After his death, a mural and an altar appeared in his honor.
“Beyond the mural, there was a small altar of devotion, as if it were the Virgin Mary, with the boy’s photo and his things, like a clock,” says Borrelli.
Although the police covered the mural with the young man’s face, there is a graffiti in his memory: “Luigi Cafaia lives”said the Italian.
The deputy regretted that these expressions of admiration for members of crime even reach social networks such as TikTok.
Los altars of the Camorra “Almost all of them were dejected years ago, but the apology moved to social networks, especially TikTok,” Borrelli explained.

What are the contributing factors to the rise in gun violence amongst youth in Naples?
## Naples on Edge: Gun Violence Amongst Youth
**Host:** We are joined today by Dr. Maria Rossi, a criminologist specializing in youth violence, to discuss the recent surge in gun-related incidents in Naples, Italy. Dr. Rossi, these cases are deeply concerning, can you shed some light on what might be driving this alarming trend?
**Dr. Rossi:** These incidents are indeed tragic and point to a complex problem. We’re seeing a disturbing increase in gun violence involving young people in Naples. [This trend is evident in various reported incidents, including the accidental shooting death of an 18-year-old and the murder of a 19-year-old following an altercation.] It’s a multifaceted issue with potential contributing factors like easy access to firearms, societal inequality, and a lack of opportunities for youth.
**Host:** You mentioned easy access to firearms. Is this a significant issue in Naples?
**Dr. Rossi:** Unfortunately, yes. The illegal firearms trade is a persistent problem in Italy, and Naples is no exception. [This easy access] makes it tragically easy for young people to get hold of weapons, sometimes without fully understanding the deadly consequences.
**Host:** The cases also highlight the role of social media in normalising violence.
**Dr. Rossi:** That’s a crucial point. We are seeing a worrying trend of glorifying violence and criminal activity on social media platforms like TikTok. This can desensitize young people to the severity of these acts and contribute to a culture of impunity.
**Host:** What can be done to address this crisis?
**Dr. Rossi:** A multi-pronged approach is essential. We need stricter gun control measures to curb the flow of illegal firearms. We also need to invest in social programs that tackle poverty and inequality, providing opportunities for young people and diverting them from a path of crime. we need to work with social media platforms to address the spread of violent content online.
**Host:** Dr. Rossi, thank you for sharing your insights on this critical issue. This is a wake-up call not only for Naples but for societies worldwide grappling with the rise of youth violence.
