By Archyde News

Archyde: Thank you for joining us today, Dr. wijaya. The recent case of a 14-year-old in Bekasi being lured into a counterfeit money scheme via social media has raised significant concerns. As an expert in cybersecurity and social media crime, what are your thoughts on this incident?

Dr. Wijaya: Thank you for having me. This case is deeply troubling but regrettably not uncommon. Social media platforms have become a breeding ground for scams targeting vulnerable individuals, especially teenagers. In this case, the perpetrator exploited the teenager’s trust and naivety by offering a seemingly simple job with a financial reward. What’s alarming is how easily the scammer was able to manipulate the victim through direct messaging (japri-japrian) and arrange a physical meeting.

Archyde: The teenager was promised IDR 50,000 for delivering a “treasure.” How do scammers use such tactics to lure young people?

Dr. Wijaya: Scammers often use enticing language and small financial incentives to attract their targets. For a teenager, IDR 50,000 might seem like a significant amount for minimal effort. The term “treasure” adds an element of mystery and excitement, which can be particularly appealing to young minds. These tactics are designed to bypass rational thinking and create a sense of urgency or prospect.

Archyde: What role do social media platforms play in enabling such crimes?

Dr. Wijaya: Social media platforms are double-edged swords. While they connect people and provide opportunities, they also lack sufficient safeguards against malicious activities. In this case, the scammer used Facebook to post a job offer and then moved the conversation to private messages, where monitoring is more challenging. Platforms need to invest in better algorithms to detect suspicious posts and educate users about potential risks.

Archyde: The teenager was instructed to meet the scammer at Tambun Station. What risks do such physical meetings pose?

Dr. Wijaya: Physical meetings escalate the danger considerably. The teenager could have been exposed to physical harm, kidnapping, or even forced into more serious criminal activities. This case highlights the importance of educating young people about the risks of meeting strangers, especially those they’ve only interacted with online.

Archyde: How can parents and educators help protect teenagers from falling victim to such schemes?

Dr. Wijaya: Education is key. Parents and educators must have open conversations with teenagers about online safety. They should emphasize the importance of verifying data, avoiding interactions with strangers, and reporting suspicious activities. Additionally, monitoring social media usage without invading privacy can definitely help identify potential risks early.

Archyde: what steps can law enforcement and policymakers take to combat these crimes?

Dr. Wijaya: Law enforcement agencies need to collaborate with social media platforms to track and apprehend scammers. Policymakers should enforce stricter regulations on online job postings and require platforms to implement robust verification processes. Public awareness campaigns can also play a crucial role in educating the community about the dangers of online scams.

Archyde: Thank you, Dr. Wijaya, for your valuable insights. This case serves as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance in the digital age.

dr. Wijaya: Thank you. It’s crucial that we all work together to protect our youth and create a safer online surroundings.
