The information technology services sector, such as software development and technology consulting, grew twice as fast as the global economy, based on the annual growth rate of value added and employment comparing the years 2000 and 2022, according to the World Bank’s Digital Advances and Trends Report 2023.
In that same period, the use of digital services increased 7% annually, at a rate six times higher than that of the world economy.
This same report indicates that between April 2020 and December 2022, the percentage of microbusinesses (0 to 4 employees) that invested in digital solutions doubled from 10% to 20%, but in the case of large companies (more than 100 employees), this percentage tripled, from 20 to 60%.
Byron René López Sánchez, head of the Center for Technologies and Communications -TICS- of Intecap, indicates that this institution focuses on six areas through which they offer short courses and longer careers. These areas are: telecommunications, software development and programming, graphic design, construction and 3D design, office automation (Microsoft data analysis and Power BI) and support and Internet of Things (IoT).
The shortest courses include between 20 and 40 hours of training, but there are others of 40-80 hours, which are taught several times a year, as places fill up. Many times students take a short course while they enroll in a university degree.
To take some technology courses, an intermediate level degree is required, but others can be taken with a third grade level, López indicates.
The three areas with the most employability
At the Intecap ICT Center, the three areas with the most employability, according to López, are:
- Software development
- Telecommunications, which covers cybersecurity, management of social networks and installation of structured cabling (copper and fiber optics).
- Technical support
International certifications
Upon completing some careers and courses, students take an exam under certain standards to obtain international certification, explains the head of the Intecap ICT center. Some of those managed by this institution are from Cisco, Microsoft, Autodesk, AWS (Amazon cloud), Adobe and Huawei. The latter inaugurated the first Huawei Information and Communication Technologies Academy (ICT Academy) in November last year, which is a collaboration between this technological development company and academies around the world, to offer training in ICT technologies. and endorsed certifications in data communication, wireless networks and network security. At the same time, it also provides training in data storage, cloud computing and virtualization, Big Data, IoT, 5G and LTE, among others.
Some of these courses and certifications have a mandatory English course, which is aligned with the European framework and levels 1.1 and 1 are reached, explains López.
Artificial intelligence
This is another area of great interest today. The Telefónica Spain website indicates that in 2022 there was a growth of 31% compared to the previous year in terms of job offers related to Artificial Intelligence, according to data from Infojobs.
And among the skills necessary to work in AI it mentions: programming language, mathematics, machine learning, natural language processing (NLP), Big Data, Cloud Computing and robotics.
