River traffic is strongly impacted on the Brussels-Charleroi canal following the technical problem which forced the shutdown of the Ronquières inclined plane on Tuesday. The boats are however not blocked but they are diverted towards Mons and towards Liège, at the cost of 200 to 250 kilometers of deviation.

River traffic was interrupted on Tuesday at the end of the day following a technical problem detected at the level of ferry n°2, recently released from maintenance and modernization. The transit of boats on the Inclined Plane had resumed on July 14 at the end of the long maintenance work on ferry n°2. The second ferry, n°1, has been stopped since a door fell on June 9, caused by a broken cable. Work to repair the damaged cable was started at the same time as maintenance and modernization works. “Tray n°2 was immediately taken out of service in order to guarantee the safety of the inclined plane itself as well as the users of the structure.“, indicated on Tuesday Sarah Pierre spokesperson for the SPW, who specified on Wednesday followingnoon that the technical investigations are continuing in order to precisely determine the origin of the problem which has paralyzed tray n°2 since Tuesday. According to the SPW, a detour of more than 200 kilometers to Mons and Tournai and 250 kilometers to Liège is imposed on boatmen following the technical problem at the Inclined Plane On average, 255 boats cross the Ronquières Inclined Plane each month, i.e. 3,014 goods boats in 2022 1,656,438 tonnes of goods passed through the structure on the Brussels-Charleroi canal in 2022. Commissioned in 1968, the Inclined Plane makes it possible to compensate for a drop of 68 meters by sliding a ferry containing one or more barges.
